Acne, the general term for various skin break-outs in the form of pimples, blackheads and whiteheads, is very common in teenagers and young adults. Although it is commonly claimed that greasy food such as pizza or french fries cause acne, research has indicated a more complicated relationship between food and acne.

Although parents commonly tell their children to avoid eating greasy foods, sweets and chocolates to prevent acne, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that greasy or sweet foods are to blame. Although it is generally beneficial to avoid these foods for health reasons, there is no proof that eating greasy food equals a more greasy skin surface.

Refined Sugar

Some researchers claim that refined sugar--white sugar used in products such as sodas and popular snacks--can lead to an increase in acne. Refined sugar can create acne because it changes the body's blood sugar levels. This causes an increase in insulin, which can affect the pores and increase the likelihood of acne.

Processed Food

Processed foods, such as white bread and sugary snacks, are often "high GI", meaning that they are high on the glycemic index and contain carbohydrates (sugars) that break down quickly. These kinds of foods, similar to refined sugars, raise the insulin levels and can cause skin problems that lead to acne.

Milk Products

Scientists have found some links between milk products and acne, though the reason behind the link is not clear. Some claim that the use of hormones given to cows and passed on to the milk cause this increase in acne, while others indicate that calcium can lead to acne.
